CANON POINT: Season Six, after sailing for Westeros
HISTORY: Wiki | Daenerys Targaryen
PERSONALITY:
cw: discussions of slavery and emotional/domestic abuse
Daenerys Targaryen is what the series calls "blood of the dragon". By nature, she is rash and vengeful against those who would do her harm, but her experiences have encouraged her to be compassionate and kind. These two aspects of her personality are constantly at war with one another, and she often requires advisers to check her when her ire is stirred.
At this point in her life, Daenerys Targaryen has many names and titles, but it was not always that way. Dany spent much of her younger days timid and afraid of the cruel world around her. It was not until she spent an extended time with people other than her abusive brother (and the people who were trying to use him) that she tasted what living was like. After being sold to Khal Drogo and being repeatedly beaten down by her brother and Dothraki society (which favored men over women), Daenerys finally rose up and found her voice, speaking up and out despite the fact that the odds were often against her. Her newfound confidence started as an act, but people quickly believed in it, and the act became real. Where she was previously being used as little more than a trophy wife, Daenerys began to take charge and take action in her relationship with Drogo, and eventually fell in love with him.
Dany's relationship and experiences with Drogo and her brother Viserys are the foundations for who she becomes as a queen. Viserys represents the patriarchy that seeks to control her, while Drogo represents old thinking capable of being changed under the proper circumstances. Dany and Drogo both end up killing Viserys together after he comes in one night and raises his voice to Dany in front of Drogo.
Drogo (along with their unborn child) is later taken from her by a woman who's village Daenerys' Dothraki clan had taken. She claims she is acting in the name of retribution, and Daenerys learns the terrors of the cycle of vengeance. Much of the Dothraki clan moves on after Drogo passes, believing that Daenerys is not strong enough to lead the Khalasar. She pays the woman back by burning her alive with Drogo's body, and when she climbs on the pyre to join him, she instead emerges unharmed with three baby dragons.
The dragons (Drogon, Viserion, and Rhaegal) become Daenerys' legacy. They are very much her children, and she treats them as such. As they grow, she forms a bond with them, and learns that she must maintain her inner strength if she has any hope of controlling them. More than once Drogon goes off hunting without Daenerys as he is growing and brings the ire of farmers. At one point, he even kills a human child that Daenerys must answer for. Her growth as an individual can be marked by the presence of the dragons. When she is at her lowest, struggling to maintain control of a city she had traveled to and freed, the dragons are nowhere to be found. When she elevates herself, the dragons reappear to help her reclaim control. Their absence teaches her that she cannot always rely on the fantastical beasts -- sometimes, wars must be won with wit and with words.
Daenerys detests unnecessary violence, but she will not hesitate to take from people she has deemed as immoral. Her moral compass is what sets her apart from other Targaryens, and she makes a lifestyle out of lifting up the impoverished to higher status and laying low those who are in power and use that power to harm others. It is where the "Breaker of Chains" title comes from -- she quite literally travels the continent and frees slaves.
Despite her occasional idealism, she is not naive. When her longtime guide and adviser Jorah the Andal betrays her, she banishes him from her presence. When he tries to fight and win her back, she banishes him again. It isn't until he reveals himself to be ill with a deadly disease that she commands him to live and, if he should survive, he would be welcomed back into her service. Daenerys, while she yearns for connection with others due to her lack of familial ties, does not trust easily.
