[She does not answer right away. Partly because she is still having trouble figuring out how to answer, partly because she does not want to look illiterate when she answers, and also because his first question makes her slightly uncomfortable.]
I do not enjoy this method of communication.
[Start there.]
My name is Daenerys. I would prefer you to know it before you know me by another name.
[She won't ask him to refer to her as royalty -- there was enough evidence to suggest it would put them in uncomfortable public situations. And...well, she's still struggling some with trying to adjust to all of that.]
I do not wish to trouble you if you haven't the time. But I have no memory of my hair ever being quite this short. Speaking plainly, it pains me to admit that I am unsure of what to do with it.
I am a man of the Night's Watch and subject to no one.
Do you understand there are no queens here? If you behave as if you are one you will be noticed, and like as not unfavorably.
I do not mean to quarrel with you. I would not pursue this if I did not care for you and wish you a pleasant life here.
I would gladly tell you in person were I not at work, pouring cold beers with strange names for men who've never held a sword in their lives because nothing I learned in my entire life at home will put coin in my pocket here save for fetching the Old Bear his drinks.
You will come to me at the safehouse when you are through, and you will find us somewhere to speak. I said that you will look me in the eye if you seek to disagree with me. And I meant it.
[And that's how she will leave it until he comes to find her.]
[ Deposited without context in Dany's inbox are three pictures of an erect penis, all from different, clinical angles. Were there any attention paid to the allure or tone of these pictures, it would probably be an attractive penis. As it stands, it's the sort of pictures you take when you're trying to sell something on Facebook Marketplace. ]
[He sees her, at that last gate and in the caves, but after a moment of eye contact, she looks away and is gone. He nods — “Right.” — and that’s the end of it, for that day. He doesn’t send her a message the next day, thinking she might want to rest. The day after, though, he contacts her.
He has to steel himself first... not by much, but enough that he notices it.]
[She isn't willing, not really. Rey hasn't come home after the gates, and she hasn't answered her texts. Neither has Kylo Ren. There are a few conclusions to draw here, and she doesn't like any of them.
So when she sees Jon's message, she ignores it for a few hours. But then, when she realizes that she's been staring at the door long enough for her tea to get cold, she realizes that she cannot stay locked in this room forever.]
Where is convenient?
[If Rey came back, she did not want the potential sight of her and Jon fighting there in the apartment.]
They never get visitors in the Red Light District, unless they are Kylo Ren. These days, he knocked less -- but that was because Rey was there to let him in. So part of her is hopeful that it is him when she comes to answer the door.
Catra is greeted to the sight of Daenerys wrapped in a loose red velvet robe (which she hastily pulls further shut when she realizes the company is not familiar), her silver hair wrapped in a braid laying over her shoulder. The apartment itself is a bit of an interesting layout. The bathroom is visible off to the right of the entrance, inside of the kitchen with little more than frosted glass to hide the view. Straight ahead of them is Daenerys' room, with a canopy bed that obviously hasn't been made in a few days, and a hallway off to the left.
The apartment is full of green plants, but bare of much else.]
--Catra.
[She's about to ask what brings her there, but her arrival is shocking enough on its own and...well, she's kind of glad to see another face. Even if she isn't dressed for company. Or anyone.]
or some confusing mix of the two. in his (limited) experience, disappearances like his are seldom isolated and since his contact list is not exactly booming these days it doesn't take too long to make all the necessary calls.
dany is second, at least. if only because han's baffling inbox message had begged an immediate response. )
[Something in her chest squeezes and then relaxes with intense relief. She had not realized how much she had missed him, until he was in her inbox again.]
I think perhaps it is I that should be asking you that question. I suppose the answer in either case is: Regrettably, yes.
[How does he ask what it is that he'd like to know: is Rey gone? Has she disappeared? He hasn't seen her around in ages, hasn't heard word from her. It's strange for him to not do that. Even though they were in conflict leading up to the New Beijing trip, he hadn't held a grudge. It was a rough time for everyone involved.
But now ... now it's strange.
And here's the thing: Rey likes to get herself into trouble. A lot of it. So—]
[She isn't sure what Han Solo is offering -- but he had invited her here, with his son and his fond memories of him. She'd shared something with him that she'd never really unpacked very much with anyone, and some emotions she thought she might carry to her grave.
Daenerys felt safe with Han Solo, and so she has no reason to hesitate to take his hand. there is something about him and his way -- the same way that Kylo Ren had managed to keep her near, even in her more volatile moments.]
I've grown from it.
[She feels the need to quantify that in the momentary silence, at least, so he does not think her some simpering girl, lost to grief.]
[ riku would want her to do this. if she doesn't do it on her own, he'll keep nagging at her. she has to do something. ]
If you're going to be close to him, you should know that when he had to make a choice, Kylo Ren chose power. He chose the Dark Side. He chose the deaths of millions, the forced conscription of children, and war against his own mother. I couldn't save him. Now, I fear the best thing I can do is stop him.
[ there's no apology. she won't make one when it still feels like daenerys betrayed her in some way, choosing kylo ren. she won't make explanations for her behavior either, won't point out that it was kylo she hadn't been ready to face when she was obviously right to steer away from daenerys and her old apartment in order to steer away from him.
still. it's easier, not looking daenerys in the face as she says this. it's why she'll say it to daenerys, and not to any of her new well-meaning housemates yet, or the other ren. ]
I'll understand if you don't reply. But I wanted you to know.
[A week passes before she replies. In truth, she was not going to reply. Absent an apology, Daenerys sees no reason to entertain conversation with Rey for the time being.
But information about people she is living with -- that is an allure that is difficult for a queen to resist, especially when she feels at a disadvantage to start.]
[It's like a knife to the gut, having him bring her up. But then -- Jon is one of the few people on the outside of all this, and one of the only people who might understand her feelings on the subject.
So she decides, for once, to be honest.]
She found me. But if you are looking for her now, I am afraid I can't help you.
( William doesn't release anything he finds from Antarctica while in Antarctica. He's sitting with the scientists' unpublished findings under thumb. He'd shared what he'd found with a few of the Displaced, including Dany when she'd checked in inside. But, he hadn't clued her into possibly releasing everything.
Post-earthquake, he has time on his hands with the outages. And he's still sitting on everything. )
